Leading with Heart: Hedley Lewis’ Mission to Fight Childhood Cancer


Hedley Lewis is an influential leader in the non-profit sector, serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa. In addition to his role at CHOC, he also holds prestigious positions as a board member of Childhood Cancer International and Chairman of Childhood Cancer International Africa. With a career that reflects dedication to supporting children and families affected by cancer, Lewis has become a driving force in the fight against childhood cancer in South Africa. Lewis’ journey to becoming CEO of CHOC was not a straight path. Initially, he built his career in the corporate world, where he acquired a range of valuable skills and experiences. However, over time, he felt the need to transition into a sector that resonated with his personal values. CHOC is the third non-profit organization that Lewis has worked for, and his time in this field has given him a new perspective on life. He was particularly drawn to the challenges faced by children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer, as well as the struggles of their families. Recognizing that his leadership and strategic skills could contribute to making a real difference, he committed himself to this cause wholeheartedly. As CEO, Lewis is responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of CHOC. His role involves overseeing a wide range of activities, from working closely with healthcare professionals and donors to guiding the organization’s initiatives aimed at improving the lives of young cancer patients. Each day, he engages with stakeholders, including pediatric oncologists, the Department of Health, and volunteers, all united in their goal to support these children and their families. Hedley Lewis’ leadership style is shaped by his experience in both the corporate and non-profit sectors. During his tenure at the Smile Foundation, where he worked prior to joining CHOC, he learned the importance of strategic vision and collaboration. CHOC works with a multi-faceted network of hospital administrators, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and donors to provide holistic care to families undergoing the challenges of childhood cancer.

Under Lewis’ leadership, CHOC has continued to expand its services to better meet the needs of its beneficiaries. One recent initiative, in partnership with iSchool Africa, provides world-class technology to children who are unable to attend school while undergoing treatment. This educational support allows young patients to continue their studies, ensuring that they do not fall behind academically during their treatment journeys. In the coming years, Lewis envisions CHOC continuing to grow and evolve to meet the increasing demands of families affected by cancer. He aims to strengthen the organization’s awareness programs, particularly in educating communities and healthcare professionals about the importance of early detection. His ultimate goal is to contribute to raising the global overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 60% by 2030. One of the biggest challenges that Lewis faces as CEO of CHOC is raising awareness about childhood cancer, particularly the importance of early diagnosis. Many families in South Africa face barriers to early detection, including socio-economic challenges, transport constraints, and cultural stigmas surrounding cancer. These issues can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, which ultimately affect patient outcomes.

To address this, CHOC has developed an Awareness Training and Education Programme that reaches professionals and communities across the country. By working with nurses, community trainers, and pediatric oncologists, CHOC aims to spread the message that early detection saves lives. Through this program, Lewis hopes to bridge the gaps that prevent timely diagnosis and ensure that more children receive the care they need at the earliest stages of their illness. Another significant challenge is providing basic resources such as food, transport, and accommodation for families who cannot afford these essentials during their child’s treatment. CHOC steps in to fill these gaps, ensuring that families can focus on their child’s health without the added stress of financial strain. Lewis believes that the only true failure is failing to try. Setbacks and challenges are inevitable, especially in the non-profit sector, but he sees each obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow. Whether it is addressing late diagnosis or finding new ways to support families, Lewis and his team at CHOC continuously strive to improve their services and adapt to the ever-changing needs of their beneficiaries.

However, Lewis takes a different approach, viewing fellow non-profit organizations as partners rather than competitors. One example of this collaboration is CHOC’s referral system, where their social workers and social auxiliary workers direct patients to other NGOs that offer specialized services. This ensures that patients receive the best possible care, even if CHOC cannot provide all the necessary resources directly. Technology plays a crucial role in CHOC’s strategy, particularly in raising awareness about childhood cancer. Social media campaigns, electronic billboards, and the organization’s website all serve as important tools in educating the public about the Siluan early warning signs and the realities of childhood cancer. Additionally, technology helps CHOC manage its operations, from data management to financial governance.

CHOC is also committed to sustainability, integrating environmentally friendly practices into its operations. The organization has upgraded many of its facilities with solar panels and energy-efficient appliances, reducing its environmental footprint and ensuring that resources remain available for families. CHOC has also implemented recycling programs in its houses and is exploring water-saving technologies like rainwater harvesting and boreholes. At the heart of CHOC’s mission is giving back to the community. The organization runs several programs that provide accommodation, transport, psychosocial support, and practical assistance to families in need. In addition to these services, CHOC’s volunteer program engages community members in various activities, from fundraising events to hands-on support at CHOC’s facilities. These volunteers play an essential role in enhancing the quality of care provided to children and their families.
