Throughout her journey, she has remained passionate about supporting others, whether that means guiding customers through complex mortgage decisions or encouraging colleagues as they develop their own careers. At EliteX, we are proud to have Tracie Burton as Cover Story of the edition: Prominent Women Leaders in Mortgage Industry, 2026.
Her interest in the mortgage sector was shaped by her own experience of buying her first home, which she remembers as one of the most overwhelming moments of her life. The process brought a mix of excitement, stress, uncertainty, and hope, and it gave her a deep appreciation for how important clear guidance and reassurance can be at such a pivotal time. Helping people achieve the dream of home ownership became a powerful motivator, and she was drawn to the trust, responsibility, and human impact that define the mortgage profession.
Our differences can become our greatest strengths when we learn how to use them.

Rather than one defining turning point, Tracie views her career as a series of meaningful stages, each embraced with commitment and curiosity. A particularly important period came during the introduction of major regulatory changes such as the Mortgage Market Review and the Retail Distribution Review. During this time, she took on the role of an ambassador for change, supporting brokers and colleagues to understand and adapt to new requirements. These changes strongly aligned with her personal values of integrity, customer-first thinking, and transparency, and they reinforced her belief that adaptability is essential in a highly regulated and constantly evolving industry.
As a woman building a career in a traditionally male-dominated environment, Tracie faced moments when her voice did not always feel heard. She responded by focusing on building strong expertise, seeking out mentors, and supporting others, particularly women who were navigating similar challenges. Alongside this, she learned to manage dyslexia, which made exams and written work more demanding earlier in her career. Over time, she came to see this difference as a strength, recognising how it enhanced her creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and capacity to see issues from fresh perspectives.
Looking ahead, Tracie sees significant change continuing across the UK mortgage market. With some of the oldest housing stock in the world, there is a growing focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and funding solutions that help future-proof homes. Regulation continues to evolve, with strong emphasis on customer protection, affordability, complex lending, and the vital role of advice. Brokers play an increasingly important role in helping customers navigate buying, remortgaging, and protection needs. At the same time, technology and AI are becoming key tools in streamlining processes, improving efficiency, and creating a smoother experience for lenders, brokers, and customers alike.
In her leadership approach, Tracie values open-mindedness, adaptability, and empathy above all else. She believes that listening carefully, respecting different viewpoints, and building trust are essential for long-term success. Even without managing a large team, she focuses on creating a positive and supportive working culture through open communication, recognition of achievements, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Making people feel valued and empowered is central to how she works.

Integrity, adaptability, and empathy are the foundations of lasting trust in our industry.
Encouraging more women into leadership roles is something Tracie feels strongly about. She believes the industry already has many inspiring women and that greater visibility through events, media, and mentoring can make a real difference. Partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities can also help showcase the wide range of opportunities available within the sector. Flexible working, supportive policies, and environments where every voice is heard are key to building lasting change.
Balancing regulation, business growth, and customer trust is, for Tracie, about integrity in everyday actions. She believes sustainable growth comes from transparency, compliance built into processes, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. Being available, answering the phone, and resolving issues quickly helps brokers focus on their clients and strengthens long-term relationships.
Her advice to young women entering the mortgage industry is to stay curious, seek mentors, speak up, and not let impostor syndrome hold them back. Differences should be embraced as strengths. Tracie’s vision for the future is an inclusive, efficient, and customer-centred mortgage industry where technology supports, rather than replaces, the human touch. She hopes to be remembered for making the mortgage process easier, fairer, and more positive for everyone involved.
Helping people achieve home ownership is a responsibility I take very seriously.
