Melissa Washington – Leading a Global Movement for Women Veterans

Washington M

Melissa Washington’s journey is a powerful example of how service, leadership, and purpose can continue long after a military career ends. Her path began at a young age when she enlisted in the United States Navy at just 18 years old. At that time, she was motivated by a desire to serve her country and experience the world beyond what she had known growing up.

The Navy provided her with both opportunity and discipline, and it became the foundation that shaped the leader she would become later in life. At EliteX, we are proud to have Melissa Washington as Cover Story of the edition: Trailblazing Women Veterans Shaping Leadership, 2026.

During her time in the military, Melissa served as a Storekeeper (SK), a role responsible for managing supplies and ensuring that operations ran smoothly. She was stationed aboard the USS Grapple (ARS 53), where she spent six months deployed in the Mediterranean. Later, she served aboard the USS Acadia (AD 42), completing another six-month deployment to the Western Pacific. These deployments allowed her to travel to places she had never imagined visiting and exposed her to the realities of global military operations.

Serving in the Navy at such a young age taught her valuable lessons about discipline, teamwork, and responsibility. Life on a naval vessel requires individuals to depend on one another, and every role contributes to the success of the mission. Melissa quickly learned that strong communication, organization, and accountability were essential for both personal and professional success.

Community and collaboration are the foundations of lasting leadership.

After transitioning out of the Navy, her connection to the military community did not end. She married a Marine she met while serving, and her role within the military world shifted from active service member to military spouse. This transition allowed her to continue experiencing the culture, values, and challenges that come with military life. Over time, she developed an even deeper understanding of the sacrifices and resilience required by both service members and their families.

The leadership lessons Melissa gained during her early years in the Navy remained with her throughout the next three decades of her professional journey. Her leadership style has continued to evolve through entrepreneurship, community building, and her work supporting women veterans. Rather than focusing on authority or hierarchy, she has built her approach around collaboration, clarity, and connection.

For Melissa, leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room. Instead, she believes leadership is about creating environments where people feel supported and empowered to contribute their ideas and strengths. Her work consistently reflects this philosophy. She focuses on building systems and communities that allow individuals to grow, lead, and support one another.

One of the key challenges she recognized early in her post-military journey was the lack of visibility for women veterans. While many organizations exist to support veterans in general, the voices and achievements of women who served have often been underrepresented. Melissa realized that waiting for recognition was not enough. Instead, she decided to create platforms where women veterans could connect, share their stories, and support one another’s success.

This mindset led to the creation of Women Veterans Alliance, an initiative that began in a very simple way. Eleven years ago, Melissa organized a small meetup in Sacramento, California. At the time, there were veteran organizations in the area, but very few spaces designed specifically for women veterans to come together in a meaningful way. Her goal was simply to create a place where women who had served could connect and build relationships.

What began as a local meetup quickly revealed a much larger need. The response from women veterans was immediate and powerful. Many were eager to connect with others who shared similar experiences, and they were excited to support each other both personally and professionally.  What began as a small local meetup and personal passion project slowly evolved, revealing the potential to become something much bigger than originally envisioned.

When women veterans come together, they create powerful impact in their communities.

Over time, Women Veterans Alliance grew into a global organization dedicated to empowering women who have served in the military. Through conferences, networking events, programs, and partnerships, the organization has created opportunities for women veterans to build connections, develop leadership skills, and expand their professional networks.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the organization’s growth has been the ripple effect created by community. When women veterans come together, they often collaborate on new business ventures, support each other’s entrepreneurial goals, and lead initiatives that positively impact their communities. Melissa has witnessed countless examples of women veterans launching businesses, leading organizations, and stepping into leadership roles after finding support within this network.

As her work expanded, Melissa recognized that there were many different needs within the women veteran community. To address these needs, she began building additional platforms that support various aspects of leadership, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.

Among these initiatives are Women Veterans Engage, The Unconference, Women Veterans Global Alliance, Women Veterans Giving, Veteran Events, and Women Veterans Magazine. Each of these platforms was created with a specific purpose in mind. Some focus on providing educational opportunities and meaningful conversations, while others support women veteran entrepreneurs or provide visibility for veteran speakers and events across the country.

Women Veterans Magazine, for example, was created to share the stories of women who have served and highlight the contributions they continue to make after their military careers. Storytelling plays a powerful role in recognition and visibility, and the magazine serves as an important resource for both information and inspiration.

Melissa’s motivation for building this infrastructure has always been rooted in a desire to create opportunities. She understands that when people are brought together in the right environment, powerful things can happen. Collaboration, mentorship, and shared experience often lead to innovation and growth.

By providing platforms that connect individuals with similar backgrounds and goals, she has helped build a network where support and leadership naturally grow. The impact of these efforts continues to expand as more women veterans discover these communities and begin contributing their own talents and ideas.

Service does not end when the uniform comes off.

Looking toward the future, Melissa is deeply focused on the legacy of the work she has created. Her goal is not simply to lead organizations during her lifetime but to build structures that will continue supporting women veterans for generations to come. She believes that strong communities and meaningful programs should exist long after their founders step away.

One initiative that is particularly meaningful to her right now is the effort to establish a memorial monument honoring women veterans at the California State Capitol Park. Throughout history, women have served the nation in many different military roles, yet their contributions have often gone unrecognized in public spaces.

Melissa hopes to see the monument fully funded and erected so that future generations can learn about the important role women have played in military service. She believes that visible recognition helps preserve history and inspires younger generations to understand the legacy of those who served before them.

Beyond the monument, her long-term vision includes seeing more women veterans fully access the benefits they earned during their service. She also hopes to see more women veterans launching successful businesses, leading organizations, and contributing to communities across the country and around the world.

Another key part of her vision involves strengthening the sense of connection among veterans. Community, in her view, is one of the most powerful tools for helping individuals succeed after military service. When people feel supported and understood, they are more confident stepping into leadership roles and pursuing new opportunities.

Despite the many successes she has experienced, Melissa openly acknowledges that leadership and entrepreneurship come with challenges. From the outside, building organizations and leading movements may appear exciting and rewarding, but the reality often includes uncertainty, pressure, and constant responsibility.

Many of the initiatives she created were not built for financial gain but out of a genuine desire to serve others. She describes her motivation as coming from a servant’s heart and a commitment to creating spaces where women veterans can thrive. However, she has also learned that financial sustainability is essential when building organizations that aim to create lasting impact.

Another challenge that leaders often face is the emotional weight of responsibility. Managing multiple initiatives, supporting communities, and navigating constant change can be overwhelming at times. Melissa admits that there are moments when the expectations and responsibilities feel heavy.

Women veterans deserve spaces where their leadership and contributions are recognized.

During those moments, she returns to the purpose behind her work. Reminding herself why she began this journey helps her stay focused and motivated. She believes that the work she is doing has a larger purpose and that the communities she helps support are worth the effort and dedication.

Melissa also speaks openly about the importance of vulnerability and personal well-being. While many people see the highlights of leadership through social media or public events, the reality is that leaders also experience personal challenges. Like many individuals, she navigates issues such as anxiety, depression, and the natural changes that come with aging, including menopause.

Acknowledging these realities has helped her become more intentional about self-care. She understands that in order to serve others effectively, she must also take care of her own health and well-being. Maintaining balance has become a crucial part of sustaining her leadership and continuing her work.

Over time, experience has also taught her the value of setting boundaries. In the early stages of her career, she often felt the need to be present everywhere and involved in everything. As she has grown as a leader, she has learned that saying no can be one of the most powerful leadership skills.

By focusing her energy on the initiatives that matter most, she is able to lead with greater clarity and purpose. This approach allows her to continue building impactful programs while also protecting the time and energy she needs to remain healthy and focused.

Melissa Washington’s journey reflects a powerful combination of service, resilience, and vision. From her early days serving in the United States Navy to her current role building global networks for women veterans, she has consistently focused on creating opportunities for others.

Her work demonstrates that leadership is not defined by titles or positions but by the ability to bring people together and create environments where they can succeed. Through the organizations and communities she has built, thousands of women veterans have found support, connection, and new paths forward.

As these networks continue to grow, the impact of her work will likely extend far beyond what she originally imagined when she organized that first small meetup in Sacramento. What began as a simple effort to bring women veterans together has evolved into a movement that is reshaping how women veterans connect, lead, and support one another around the world.

Leadership is about creating opportunities and communities where others can thrive.
