Niala Butt’s journey into insurance began at the age of 17, when a simple note card in her school careers office caught her attention and sparked a curiosity that would shape more than 25 years of professional dedication. What started as an interest quickly became a lifelong commitment to understanding risk, delivering fair outcomes, and recognizing the human stories behind every policy and claim.
Niala Butt | Head of Casualty Claims | Liberty Specialty Markets
From modest beginnings, she built her expertise step by step, qualifying as ACII and earning the title of Chartered Insurer. At EliteX, we are proud to have Niala Butt as part of the edition: Impactful Women in Insurance, 2026.
She began her career in underwriting, progressing from Senior Casualty to Property underwriter, before transitioning into claims, where she specialized in Casualty and Medical Malpractice. Her career path has not been linear, but it has been intentional. After experiencing redundancy twice, she expanded her professional scope by joining the Bank of England as a Senior Insurance Supervisor. This experience strengthened her understanding of regulation and governance, broadening her commercial and strategic outlook. Eventually, she returned to the sector she loves, bringing with her a richer and more balanced perspective of the insurance ecosystem.
Lead with integrity, stay curious, and never forget the human story behind every claim.

Today, she serves as UK and MENA Head of Casualty Claims. In this role, she sets the strategic direction for casualty claims across the UK while supporting the MENA region. She translates vision into measurable outcomes and leads a high performing claims team with a strong focus on technical excellence and customer service. She oversees operational responsibilities, streamlines processes, drives consistent claims governance, and ensures delivery against key performance indicators. Her leadership style is people focused but commercially aware. She works closely with underwriting, actuarial, legal, business development, and client teams to ensure decisions balance risk management with customer trust and business priorities. She also leads the Liberty International Insurance Integrated Claims Unit and represents claims perspectives at a global product board level.
Beyond her formal role, Niala has made a meaningful impact across the industry. She has worked closely with the Chartered Insurance Institute throughout her career to help raise professional standards and served for seven years on its Diversity Action Group. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Lloyd’s Market Association General Liability Committee and sits on both the International and US Liability Business Panels. These positions allow her to influence market discussions, strengthen governance standards, and contribute to shaping the future of liability business.
Her leadership extends beyond technical excellence. She founded and leads the Ethnic Women in Insurance Network, a grassroots, member led initiative created to address invisible barriers faced by ethnically diverse women in the insurance ecosystem. What began as a focused initiative has grown rapidly, doubling its reach in the past year. Through mentorship programs, panel events, wellbeing initiatives, and collaborations with insurers, legal professionals, and market associations, the network has delivered practical outcomes that support career development and expand professional networks. A recent mentoring collaboration with the Lloyd’s Market Association was fully booked within days, reflecting the strong demand for meaningful inclusion initiatives.
Niala’s commitment to inclusion is deeply personal. Entering the industry straight from school as a Muslim woman of ethnic background, she faced harassment, bullying, discrimination, and the instability of redundancy. These challenges were painful, but they strengthened her resilience. She leaned on mentors and supportive colleagues and turned difficult experiences into purposeful action. Over the past two decades, she has mentored others, participated in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion councils, and led people focused initiatives in various roles. She also co-authored a children’s fiction book titled Aisha’s Netball to encourage early conversations about inclusion and empower the next generation. Through these efforts, she transformed personal adversity into leadership and advocacy for change.

Inclusion is not a side initiative – it is a business responsibility.
As a leader, she believes it is essential to stay current in an industry that never stands still. She actively participates in emerging risk committees, reads industry research, engages in market forums, and organizes joint training sessions so her team can learn and apply insights together. She is particularly interested in how technology, including artificial intelligence, is shaping underwriting and claims. For her, innovation is not just about efficiency but about enhancing customer service, improving responsiveness, and delivering more personalized solutions.
She believes strong leadership today requires humanity alongside strategy. Integrity, respect, clear communication, accountability, adaptability, and commercial awareness are qualities she considers essential. She sees leadership as empowering others, building trust, and creating an environment where people can perform at their best while feeling supported. Her coaching style reflects her belief that high performance and empathy can exist together.

Balancing professional and personal life has also shaped her perspective. Motherhood brought new challenges at a time when hybrid working was not yet common. She remembers rushing from the office to catch trains, coordinating childcare arrangements, and feeling the pressure to manage both worlds successfully. With the support of her husband and family, she learned the importance of planning, prioritizing, and asking for help. These experiences made her more empathetic and flexible as a leader, reinforcing her belief that supportive cultures enable people to thrive both at work and at home.
Looking ahead, Niala does not define success through rigid milestones. She believes in growing organically through commitment, hard work, and openness to opportunity. She remains optimistic about the future of insurance and excited by the talent emerging across the market. She is particularly inspired by how curiosity and innovation continue to drive the sector forward.
Her message to readers is simple yet powerful. In a fast paced and ever changing world, it is important to be kind to oneself. It is easy to move quickly from one challenge to the next without pausing to recognize progress. She encourages professionals to celebrate their achievements, continue learning, lift others as they rise, and remain authentic. By doing so, individuals not only strengthen their own careers but also help shape a more inclusive, resilient, and customer focused insurance industry.
Resilience is not just about surviving challenges, it is about turning them into purpose.
